The Ultimate Guide to SPRUCE Swedish Dishcloths:

The Ultimate Guide to Swedish Dishcloths

Published by The Green Collective | Nelson, NZ

One small cloth. 200+ washes. Zero paper towel regret. Here's everything you've ever wanted to know about Swedish dishcloths; why they exist, why they work, and why so many New Zealanders are making the switch.

What is a Swedish Dishcloth?

Swedish dishcloths are a Scandinavian kitchen staple that have been made in Sweden since 1949. They're a hybrid cloth (part sponge, part rag) made from a blend of natural cellulose (wood pulp) and cotton offcuts.  The result is a thin, flat cloth that starts off a little stiff but softens beautifully the moment it gets wet, becoming super absorbent, flexible and genuinely brilliant to use.

Unlike the synthetic kitchen cloths that pile up in most kiwi drawers, Swedish dishcloths are 100% plant-based. The cellulose comes from sustainably managed forests (certified under ISO 14001 environmental management standards), and the cotton comes from manufacturing offcuts (threads too short to be reused in textiles that would otherwise go to waste). Even the inks used to print the designs are eco-certified and water-based.

🌳 Cellulose (Wood Pulp) Made like paper - soaked, pulped, dried and formed into sheets. Certified sustainable forestry under ISO 14001.
🧵 Cotton Off-cut cotton threads from manufacturing - too short to reuse as fabric, but perfect for binding with cellulose to give the cloth its strength.
🎨 Eco-Certified Ink Water-based and eco-friendly. Safe in your kitchen and on the planet.

SPRUCE dishcloth in the kitchen

At The Green Collective, we make SPRUCE, the original Swedish dishcloth, printed with original NZ art by over 30 local designers and some from our international friends. We've been proudly NZ's number one for SPRUCE dishcloths since we launched in 2015 because we believe sustainable living should look as good as it works.

"Outstanding quality — these cloths last for years and may be composted once they wear out." — Jill T., verified SPRUCE customer

Why They're Better Than Paper Towels

Paper towels are one of those products that became a habit more than a necessity. They were invented in the 1900's for a completely different purpose (sanitary medical alternative to cloth towels in healthcare), and clever marketing turned a smaller and thicker batch of them into a kitchen essential. But when you look at the numbers, a Swedish dishcloth wins on nearly every measure.

💡 The maths that matter:
One SPRUCE dishcloth replaces up to 17 rolls of paper towels over its lifetime. At $1.30 per roll in the cheapest combo pack, that's $19.50 in savings from a cloth that costs just $8.90.
What we're comparing Paper Towel SPRUCE Swedish Dishcloth
How long it lasts Single use 200+ washes / ~12 months
Cost over 12 months $22-$50+ $8.90
Absorbency Okay for light tasks Highly absorbent, holds more liquid
Dry time Immediately binned As little as 15 minutes - naturally antibacterial when dry
End of life Landfill Home compostable in 6-8 weeks
Chemical content Bleaches, adhesives, conditioners (often unlisted) 100% plant-based, eco-certified inks
Design options White or plain 65+ original NZ art designs

Paper towels are also not as innocent as they appear. Most are made from virgin timber (not recycled), bleached to look white, and held together with chemical binders and conditioners. The ingredients list? Good luck finding it on the packet,  it's buried deep in the parent company's website, if listed at all.

A Swedish dishcloth isn't just a greener choice. It's a smarter, more economical and frankly more enjoyable one. Having a beautiful cloth on your bench is genuinely nicer than a roll of paper towels. It elevates your home, makes you look organised and efficient and declares that you care for what you use on your daily surfaces. Stinky rag sitting wet in the corner of your sink, or a beautiful printed dishcloth that you aren't ashamed of a visitor spying.

How Long Do They Last?

A good quality Swedish dishcloth like SPRUCE can handle 200+ machine washes - which in real life translates to roughly 9–12 months of daily kitchen use. That's a long time for something that costs less than $9.

The lifespan of your cloth depends largely on how you care for it day-to-day. The single most important habit? Rinse and allow to dry after each use. Swedish dishcloths are naturally antibacterial when dry, and they can dry in as little as 15 minutes, which is one of the things that makes them so brilliant for hygiene.

💚 Emma's top tip for longevity: After each use, rinse your SPRUCE and drape it over your tap or the edge of the sink so air can circulate around it. The faster it dries, the longer it lasts and the better it performs.

Colour may fade slightly over many washes and that's perfectly natural for a plant-based product. A faint shadow from turmeric or beetroot isn't a sign of a dirty cloth; it's a sign of a well-loved one. For deeper staining, try spraying with an all-purpose cleaner and leaving for a few minutes before rinsing. For very stubborn marks, a diluted whitening-based cleaner works well and will not affect the screen-printed design.

How to Wash Them

Swedish dishcloths are wonderfully low-maintenance. You have four great options depending on what's convenient:

  1. Washing machine: pop it in with your regular wash. Works perfectly.
  2. Dishwasher (top rack): a favourite option for many customers. Works a treat.
  3. Microwave: wet the cloth first, then microwave for 1 minute. This disinfects the cloth quickly between washes.
  4. Boiling water:  drop into a pot of boiling water for 1 minute for a sanitising clean. Old-school but effective.
☀️ Line dry in sunlight: Sunlight is a natural sanitiser and will help maintain the whiteness of your cloth. It's the SPRUCE's best friend.

One thing to avoid: leaving a wet cloth bunched up. A damp, scrunched cloth is where bacteria thrive,  in any kitchen cloth, not just Swedish dishcloths. Laying it flat or draping it open is all it takes to stay fresh between washes. Luckily a SPRUCE want's to open up and show it's design. It's the perfect size for laying over your tap or edge of your sink.

Are They Compostable?

Yes, and this is one of the things we love most about SPRUCE. At the end of its long life, your Swedish dishcloth can go straight into your home compost where it will break down in just 6-8 weeks. No landfill.  Just rich compost.

This is possible because the cloth is 100% plant-based (cellulose and cotton), with no synthetic materials or plastics. The inks are water-based and eco-certified, so the entire cloth is safe to compost.

Alternatively, SPRUCE can also be recycled alongside corrugated cardboard. So even if composting isn't your thing, there's a responsible end-of-life option for every household.

Compare that to paper towels... which go straight to landfill after a single use. And if wet wipes, tissues, or synthetic cloths are your current go-to, none of those are compostable either. A SPRUCE is genuinely one of the most end-to-end sustainable easy swaps you can put in your kitchen.

Environmental Impact

Let's put the full picture together, because the environmental case for Swedish dishcloths is genuinely compelling.

Paper towels have a hidden cost. Most rolls are still made from virgin timber (not recycled wood), which means trees grown for years and used for just a few seconds. The production process involves bleaching, chemical binding agents, and significant water use. And at the end of it all? Landfill.

Swedish dishcloths are the opposite story. The trees used for cellulose are sustainably managed under international environmental standards. The cotton is reclaimed from manufacturing offcuts. The inks are eco-certified. The cloth is made in Sweden (a country with rigorous environmental manufacturing standards) in a factory that has been doing this since 1949.

And once you're done with it? Into the compost it goes.

17 rolls of paper towels = 1 SPRUCE dishcloth.
Scale that across a family of four for a year, and the reduction in packaging, landfill waste and virgin timber is significant.

We're also transparent about provenance. No one in the southern hemisphere currently makes this style of cloth. Other countries (Germany, China) have started producing similar-looking products, but they are not the original Swedish patented cloth. If you're not sure where a cloth comes from, ask. At The Green Collective, SPRUCE is always the original, made in Sweden since 1949.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a Swedish dishcloth on all surfaces?

Yes! SPRUCE is versatile enough for bench wipe-downs, dishes, stovetops, mirrors, and spills of all kinds. Because it's highly absorbent, it handles bigger messes better than most synthetic cloths.

My cloth smells - what do I do?

This usually means the cloth really needs a wash, or it dried while bunched up and damp. Give it a good scrunch through some detergent mixed water then machine wash (or a minute in the microwave while wet), then lay it flat to dry - ideally somewhere with airflow. Sunlight is a great natural deodoriser too.

Will the print wash off?

No. The screen-printed designs are deeply fixed with eco-certified inks that hold through repeated washing. Even if you use a diluted whitening-based cleaner for stain removal, the design will remain intact. Watch for the cheaper alternatives which are often digitally printed. That ink sits on top lending it to feel slimy.

Are Swedish dishcloths safe to use with food?

Absolutely. SPRUCE is 100% plant-based with no synthetic materials. The inks are water-based and eco-certified. They're completely food-safe. They make a great safe face cloth for toddlers. Kids report them feeling softer than a scratchy flannel. When wet they can be used as a non slip mat under kids (or pets) bowls. Makes clean up even easier!

How is SPRUCE different from cheap imitations?

SPRUCE is the original Swedish dishcloth, made in Sweden since 1949 in a factory with internationally certified environmental standards. Cheaper versions from Germany or China try to replicate the look but often use synthetic blends or lower-quality materials. Always check the origin. If you're not sure, ask us!

Can I compost my cloth at the end of its life?

Yes! A SPRUCE will break down in your home compost in just 6-8 weeks. Alternatively, it can be recycled alongside corrugated cardboard. Either way, it never has to go to landfill.

How many cloths do I need?

Most households do well with 2-4 cloths on rotation. That way one is always clean and dry while others are in use or freshly washed. Our sets of 2 and sets of 4 are great starting points.

Are SPRUCE dishcloths a good gift?

They make a brilliant gift. Practical, beautiful and genuinely useful. We also offer SPRUCE Greeting Cards: a card that becomes a dishcloth, so recipients get both a message and a useful present in one. A few of our designs have also been made into limited-edition gift packs.

Over 1,100 five-star reviews. NZ's #1 for SPRUCE.
